Destination Overview

Newlyweds who honeymoon in Michigan are sure to find themselves in a “Water-Winter Wonderland”, as the state is affectionately nicknamed. While it’s famous for cars, beer, and Motown, the Great Lakes state is also home to several beautiful bodies of water. Though Michigan has been described as a winter wonderland, the area remains a favorite vacation destination year round, particularly in autumn and summer.

Gorgeous nature is part of Michigan’s DNA. Four of the five Great Lakes border Michigan, gifting it with more miles of freshwater shoreline than any other state in the continental US. The mitten-shaped state boasts miles of gorgeous sand dunes on its west coast, and more lighthouses than any other state. Water is truly everywhere here: with 11,000 inland lakes, you are never more than six miles from a fresh water source. Include a trip to the woodsy Upper Peninsula which will reveal awe-inspiring natural beauty around every turn. Lovebirds could spend the whole entire honeymoon simply hiking, biking, snowmobiling, or swimming Michigan’s lush and bountiful landscape.

Natural scenery aside, culture and activities abound in the Great Lakes state. Spend a day on the scenic Mackinac Island collecting Petoskey stones. Indulge your inner children with a visit to Battle Creek, the cereal capital of the world. Make like hipsters and witness Detroit’s grassroots revival firsthand or go retro with a visit to the Motown Records Museum, where Diana Ross and Stevie Wonder made hits in the 1960’s. It would be a shame to leave Michigan without a taste of its many unique culinary delights, including Mackinac Island fudge, Superman ice cream, and Michigan cherries. Wash it all down with your choice of Michigan brew, like Bell’s or Founder’s, or a local soda pop like Faygo or Vernor’s.

Michigan offers visitors an amazing blend of nature, culture and activities. It’s an excellent state for a fun-filled honeymoon, mini-moon, or romantic getaway. In this water-winter wonderland, you’ll surely create sweet memories to cherish forever.
