- When to Go: Springtime is a delight for exploring London’s famous gardens, and winter lights up the city with festive holiday cheer, but expect it to get dark early and beware of shopping crowds. Most visitors go between April and September for the more pleasant, summery weather. Two final tips: October is rough because school vacations unleash crowds of children, and July-August can be unpleasantly sweaty.
- Getting In: Heathrow Airport (LHR) is one of the world’s busiest airports, and services most incoming flights. Some flights, however, arrive at Gatwick Airport (LGW), a bit further from the city. Taxi services and car rental stations at either airport can help get you get some wheels for the drive to your hotel. Train and bus service is also excellent from the major airports into London proper.
- Getting Around: The London tube, or subway, is a great way to get around the city. Driving in London isn’t recommended, as it’s chaotic both in terms of traffic and city design. Rush hour is even worse. Do yourselves a favor and use the tube, taxis, buses, and bicycles to get around with minimal stress.
- Tipping: Many restaurants add a service charge, making tipping unnecessary. Pub workers don’t expect tips, and taxi drivers appreciate if you round up the fare or tip 12-15%. Always look for the service charge on your bill to see if a tip has already been added.
